Daniel Nxumalo is a 17-year-old actor currently doing his final year at Petra College Senior, graduating with the class of 2018 in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. Daniel is a steward, head of discipline (a non-existent position before his arrival) for his school club. He was elected House Captain for Tshabezi at Petra for the year 2018. He is also enjoying his current term of office in the Bulawayo Junior City Council in the capacity of Junior Councilor for 2017/18.  Daniel has won 3 Honors at NIAA (National Institute of Allied Arts) Speech and Drama Festival and was awarded colors in drama.

Daniel’s passion for the performing arts began at the tender age of 7 when he was given the role of friend to Christopher Robin at his local primary school production of “Winnie the Pooh”. His next stint came the following year when he was given the role of “The Blue Star” in the Christmas nativity play of the birth of Jesus again at his local primary school. Between the ages of 9 and 15, Daniel would continue to nurture his talent by taking part in minor roles in community plays, and sometimes performing at his local church. In 2016, his big break came when he was cast in a supporting role as “Gerald Croft” in Petra’s production of “An Inspector Calls”. He would go on to perform at the NIAA Speech and Drama festival in 2016, partaking in an exert from “An Inspector Calls” where he took home honors (highest grade possible for a score of 90% and above). This exert went on to be awarded the best exert in Zimbabwe for 2016 by the NIAA. In 2017, He would again take a major role in his school’s production of “Les Misérables”, playing the supporting lead “Inspector Javert”. He would then perform again at the NIAA Speech and Drama festival and would take home 2 more Honors. That same year he was awarded colors in Drama and also awarded the “Daniel Lasker Trophy” for the most compelling performance of the year.  But his greatest moment came when he was selected to represent Zimbabwe at the World Championships of Performing Arts in the United States.  With an upcoming role in another Petra production and with many more short film listings coming up, the future looks bright for the young talent.

As you can see his passion began when he was young and he has developed it over time. Why acting might you ask? Well for Daniel, acting has given him the opportunity to be able to express himself. While recovering from many operations, he often had to face bullying from fellow classmates and colleagues who at the time did not know much about his condition. Once he discovered acting, Daniel soon saw this as a chance to unlock his inner philosophical and intricate mindset that had been dormant or suppressed, due to the abuse he had faced for his condition in his early teens. Now an accomplished actor, he looks to take his career to the next level by going to compete in the World Championships of Performing Arts in Hollywood and performing on one of the worlds largest stages. His passion comes from being able to use his gifts to send a positive message to young people out there in today’s fast paced world, and also being able to tell the stories of the voiceless through film. He is goal driven and committed to taking his career as far as possible. With Zimbabwean born American actress, Danai Gurira, lighting up the world with her performance in the critically acclaimed movie Black Panther, Daniel hopes to soon follow in her footsteps and destroy the stereotypes about not only Zimbabweans but also Africans as a whole through film.

When asked about going to Hollywood, Daniel said “I have always loved acting since I was a child and dreamed of one day making it on the big stage. Now I have the opportunity to do just that. ZICOPA has given me the platform to take my passion to the world. This is truly a once in a life opportunity that I believe ZICOPA has provided a chance for many of our young unearthed talents here in Zimbabwe and exposed them to the world out there. I am really looking forward to going to the World Championships not only to compete for Grand Champion Performer of the world, but to learn more about Acting as an industry and to gain the experience and I am hoping to really take my acting to the next level. I am just man with a dream hoping to soar higher”
